Arlington, Virginia - Historic Tradition and Modern Day
Hotel Palomar Arlington, a Kimpton Hotel, makes its home in the urban neighborhood of Rosslyn in the vibrant community of Arlington, Virginia. Our setting, right across the street from Freedom Park and looking across the Potomac River, provides a perfect locale for all there is to see and do in our own backyard as well as nearby Washington DC.Arlington is home to the Pentagon and The Marine Corps War Memorial (the Iwo Jima Memorial). The city is perhaps best known for Arlington National Cemetery, the nation's largest military cemetery. Established during the Civil War on the former estate of Robert E. Lee, Arlington Cemetery has become a symbol for the heroism and dedication of the American soldier. Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 300,000 of our nation's military personnel, including the Tomb of the Unknowns and the John F. Kennedy grave site.
Arlington is also home to the Wright Brothers' first public demonstration of their airplane. As a result of their successful test at Fort Myer in September 1908, the U.S. government purchased planes with the same specifications, launching the United States aviation industry.
From historic tradition to modern-day history…Arlington is also the home base of the Defense Department Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which built the pre-cursor to the Internet in order to carry data on specialized computers, part of which included using the @ sign to separate components of a sender's message, still used in today's e-mail protocol.
